We’ve become too accustomed to equating health with our exercise and nutrition routine, but there are many other ways to improve overall health and well-being that don’t require a drop of sweat or any lifestyle changes.

Perhaps you’re just not “ready” for an exercise routine. Maybe you’ve been going through a complete lifestyle overhaul and are looking for the next step. Here are a few areas that will dramatically improve health without any extra effort.

Cleaning Supplies

We want our homes to be clean, the idea being that by disinfecting everything we are protecting our families. But let me cue you into a little secret: unless you’re going to perform surgery on your bathroom vanity, you don’t need to kill everything.

There’s probably nothing that dangerous to kill, and you could be doing quite the opposite: exposing yourself and your family to dangerous, toxic chemicals that disrupt everything from breathing to hormones; ridding yourselves of beneficial bacteria that will promote health or strengthen the immune system; contributing to the super bug.

Okay, so that last one was a bit extreme, but the reality is that most mainstream cleaning chemicals, including antibacterial products, are causing more harm than they’re combating.

Here’s simple switches:

- White distilled vinegar mixed with water works great for mopping floors and cleaning windows/mirrors, toilets, tubs, tile, vanities and counter tops, as well as other surfaces. Pick it up at your next grocery run!

- Baking soda makes a great abrasive cleaner to scrub tubs and soiled surfaces. Mix with vinegar to clean grout, remove stains and more - it's in the grocery section, too!

- If you’re not ready to completely give up “products” Seventh Generation is one of my favorite brands, particularly their Multi-Surface Cleaner and Tub & Tile Cleaner.

Cosmetics/Health & Beauty

Each and every day, we slather products all over our bodies that are known to cause cancer, hormone disruption and toxicity to entire body systems. I used to think that it was some kind of conspiracy theory, but there’s more and more evidence this is not so.

Europe has banned over 1,000 chemicals and substances in products, whereas the United States under FDA guidelines has banned under a dozen. There are more and more products emerging with a cleaner label, but not many brands have eliminated everything.

Here’s where you can make simple switches I’ve made:

- Coconut oil has now replaced my makeup remover, face wash, body lotion, lip balm, and probably more things than I can even remember. My OBGYN recently recommended it to combat “dryness” in your mama parts caused by breastfeeding or age. I pick mine up at the grocery store, or you can buy here.

- Castile soap has replaced my hand soap (I use this container and fill soap then water to the respective lines), body wash and I even use it with wipes for my kiddos (2 tbsp soap with 1 tbsp olive oil in 1.5 cup water, with a roll of paper towels). I buy it in bulk and it lasts about 18 months, even though I use it for everything. (I have since switched to castile bar soap for bath time.)

- The CRUNCHI makeup line has gone further than any company I’ve found in terms of ingredients they ban from their products. Their products include primer, foundation, blush, bronzer, mascara, lip gloss and lipstick, and it’s all organic, toxin-free, non-GMO and cruelty free. They even have an entire line of synthetic brushes that make application fast and flawless. You can learn more about them here.

Food Containers

If you’re using plastic containers to prepare, store and serve food, there’s a big opportunity to health improvements by switching to glass containers. Plastic is a major disruptor of hormones that can lead to a myriad of issues, including obesity. Yes, switching your containers can help you lose weight!

Another great thing about switching your containers is they will last longer. If you chose to continue using plastic containers, keep them away from any changes in heat – so, only cold food, no freezing, microwaving or dishwashing. I like these from Pyrex because the lids lock. I’ve also heard good things about stainless steel containers. Just keep the lids off the food itself.

Self Talk

Have you ever stopped to think that you’re sabotaging your own health by the things you think about or say? Our brains absorb all the messages we are exposed to on a daily basis, from the advertisements we see to those we spend time with and, yes, our own self-doubt and judgment.

Here’s some strategies to implement that will change how you view yourself and the obstacles ahead of you:

- Hang notes on your mirror that say things like “You have what it takes.” This article from NPR has some great reasons why this works.

- Learn to use your subconscious to your advantage. Our conscious minds can process 200-300 words per minute, but the subconscious can process more than 4 times that amount in the same time frame. I've worked with fellow business mama Liz Kahn to understand how to take control of my thoughts to create and maintain a positive emotional state, and it's helped me overcome my anxiety disorder as well as many other obstacles I have and do encounter. Here is a great video that describes it in more detail.
